FACILITIES
KEEPING ALPACAS
Alpacas are generally hardy creatures but keepers should certain they are providing the best possible facilities.

-
Alpacas require shelter in harsh winter conditions. This can be in the form of a mobile field shelter in their paddock, or if you have the use of a barn they can be brought inside and put into pens. On our farm we use both field shelters and a barn which doubles up for carrying out health checks and other husbandry tasks.

-
Per acre of land, 6 alpacas can be grazed.

-
Water troughs must be provided in all paddocks and checked daily in the colder months to ensure they have not frozen over.

-
Hay feeders are needed in every paddock, it is best to use mobile feeders so they can be easily moved.
